MARTIN MARIETTA WINS MAGLEV STUDY CONTRACT

BETHESDA, Md., Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Martin Marietta Corporation (NYSE: ML) has been awarded a $234,000 contract to conduct a series of studies to evaluate high-speed magnetic levitation (MagLev) transportation in the Baltimore-Washington corridor.
Under a subcontract from KCI Technologies, Inc., a Baltimore- based engineering firm, Martin Marietta will investigate potential route alignments and proposed MagLev technologies, including existing systems used in Germany and Japan.
Martin Marietta also will develop a systems operations plan and cost effectiveness studies assessing routes and technologies in various combinations. Results of the studies ultimately will be provided to Maryland's Department of Transportation Mass Transit Administration.
MagLev trains use conventional or superconducting magnets to "float" passenger railcars above guideways. MagLev trains are propelled at speeds up to 300 mph, and could make the 40-mile trip between Baltimore and Washington in as little as 15 minutes.
Martin Marietta has been conducting MagLev studies for the Federal Railroad Administration since 1991 in the areas of guideway alignments, system safety and development risk mitigation and system test planning.
