MARTIN MARIETTA TO DELIVER ADVANCED SENSOR SYSTEM
FOR POTENTIAL USE ON AIR FORCE F-22
BETHESDA, Md., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Martin Marietta (NYSE: ML) has received a contract for approximately $50 million from the U.S. Air Force to provide a new-generation sensor system for potential use on the F-22 Advanced Tactical Fighter.
Martin Marietta will provide the advanced Infrared Search and Track (IRST) system to the Air Force in 1997 for flight tests. The development and demonstration program is sponsored by the Avionics Directorate, Wright Laboratory, Air Force Material Command, Wright- Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.
IRST detects and tracks aircraft at extended ranges through an advanced technology that senses the contrast between infrared energy from warm targets and their relatively cooler background. The use of heat-sensitive infrared technology permits the pilot to search for aircraft without having to radiate energy that would reveal his presence. IRST complements the fighter's fire control radar and increases the reliability of the targeting information the pilot needs to perform his mission and return safely.
"This contract makes us the leader in an emerging defense electronics market segment that could provide significant new sales opportunities in the late 90s and beyond," said William P. Wesley, vice president of Martin Marietta's Advanced Systems mission area.
Wesley said approximately 50 engineers and administrative support personnel currently employed by Martin Marietta in Orlando will be assigned to the development program by the end of 1992.
In 1990, a prototype infrared system built by Martin Marietta successfully completed a series of 41 flight tests.
IRST technology also could be applied to the Navy A-X and the service's current inventory of F-14 and F-18 fighters, as well as the Air Force's F-15.
