MARTIN MARIETTA THRUST REVERSERS SELECTED BY GE
BETHESDA, Md., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Martin Marietta

Corporation (NYSE: ML) has been awarded a $155-million contract by GE Aircraft Engines for continued production of jet engine thrust reversers.
Martin Marietta Aero & Naval Systems will produce the reversers for the GE CF6-80C2 turbojet engine at its Middle River, Md., facility. The latest order brings the total number of Martin Marietta CF6-80C2 model reversers under contract to more than 1,300, with deliveries scheduled through 1996.
The CF6-80C2, manufactured by GE Aircraft Engines in Cincinnati, with Martin Marietta thrust reversers, powers Boeing 747s and 767s and Airbus A300s and A310s.
Thrust reversers augment an aircraft's brakes on landings by reversing the direction of engine airflow.
Aero & Naval Systems has been producing various models of the complex structures since 1969, and now has delivered more than 3,300 reversers found on a variety of U.S.- and foreign-built commercial aircraft flown by over 100 airlines worldwide. The latest versions of the Martin Marietta reversers make extensive use of lightweight composite materials to reduce aircraft weight.
"This new contract further strengthens our commercial aerostructures business sector, and is a direct result of a number of initiatives we've recently undertaken to become more competitive," said Joseph D. Antinucci, president of Martin Marietta Aero & Naval Systems. "These steps include facility modernization, integration of computer systems and reorganization and streamlining of our management structure. This award not only increases our market share but ideally positions us for winning significant additional commercial business."
Approximately 150 Aero & Naval Systems employees are associated with the GE CF6-80C2 program.
Martin Marietta also is under contract to United Technologies Pratt & Whitney to design, develop and build as many as 500 thrust reversers for the PW4168 engine that will power the Airbus A330.
