MARTIN MARIETTA HELLFIRE II ORDERED INTO PRODUCTION

BETHESDA, Md., May 27 -- Martin Marietta Corporation (NYSE: ML) today received a $141.2-million contract to begin manufacturing an advanced-technology version of Hellfire anti-armor missiles for the U.S. Army and Marine Corps.
The award from the U.S. Army Missile Command calls for Martin Marietta to build 3,905 Hellfire II missiles with first deliveries next year and continuing through 1995.
Follow-on production contracts and international orders could bring total lifetime program value to Martin Marietta of more than $1 billion.
The helicopter-launched Hellfire II uses the same laser-guidance system as its predecessor, but incorporates an improved seeker, digital autopilot controls and "tandem" warhead designed to defeat reactive armor.
The missile's performance also is increased by its ability to defeat enemy electro-optical countermeasures, fly lower trajectories, reject false target reflections and operate in marginal weather conditions.
Hellfire II is compatible with Apache, Kiowa, AH-1W, Cobra and the future Comanche helicopters and can be adapted for use on ships, ground vehicles and fixed-wing aircraft.
The production order follows a successful development program begun by Martin Marietta in 1990. During this initial phase, Hellfire II scored 46 successes in 50 flight tests under a wide variety of battlefield conditions.
Hellfire II work will be performed by Martin Marietta Electronics & Missiles at its facilities in Orlando and Ocala, Fla., and Pike County, Ala.
