MARSHA R. PERELMAN NAMED PGW'S PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- James N. Wade, chairperson of the Philadelphia Facilities Management Corporation (PFMC), which oversees the operations and management of Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW), said today that Marsha R. Perelman has been nominated to be president and chief executive officer of the municipally owned utility.
The appointment, to be effective Feb. 16, 1993, is subject to approval of the Philadelphia Gas Commission.
PGW's top position has been vacant for the past 3-1/2 years. In the interim, Executive Vice President Alfred P. Degen has been the senior officer and has managed the utility's day-to-day operations.
Perelman has served as a board member of PFMC since May 12, 1992.
In making the announcement, Wade said: "My PFMC colleagues and I are delighted that Ms. Perelman has accepted this challenging and demanding position. She is a talented executive with extensive experience in business and public policy and we have had the opportunity to observe how she uses her talent and experience during her service on the PFMC board.
"A half-billion-dollar business needs people with solid business experience to make it succeed. Ms. Perelman will be able to hit the ground running by virtue of her participation in a number of important policy decisions during this period.
"We look forward to working with her to continue to provide PGW customers with the most reliable, safest and most economical gas service possible.
"The PFMC board also wishes to express its profound appreciation to Al Degen for his exemplary stewardship of the company during this very trying interval, while the company was being subjected to severe consequences of an economy in recession and a transition in the political leadership of the city," Wade concluded.
Formerly president of Clearfield Ohio Holding, Inc., Perelman has had extensive fuel industry experience in both natural gas distribution and oil transportation. She has also held executive positions at the Penn Central Corporation and Buckeye Pipeline Co., a Penn Central subsidiary.
Until recently, Perelman was acting president of the Philadelphia Zoo, a position which has been filled by former Philadelphia Streets Commissioner Alexander "Pete" Hoskins. Perelman has a bachelor's degree in city planning from Northwestern University and a master's degree in the same field from the University of Pennsylvania.
PGW is the largest municipally owned gas distribution company in the country with revenues of $497.5 million (for the 12 months ending June 30, 1992), and 525,000 customers.
