MARS LANDING AN INTERACTIVE ONE FOR PUBLIC.

Byline: Tony Knight Daily News Staff Writer

From a festival in the Pasadena Civic Center where Mars pictures will be broadcast on a 25-foot TV screen, to a 1,000-page Web site where armchair astronauts can ``mouse around'' mission control, there are many ways the public can interact with the Mars Pathfinder mission.

Astronauts Buzz Aldrin Colonel Buzz Aldrin, Sc.D (born January 20, 1930 as Edwin Eugene Aldrin, Jr.) is an American pilot and astronaut who was the Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 11, the first lunar landing. , Sally Ride and Story Musgrave will be on hand at the three-day Planetfest, July 4-6, at the Pasadena Civic Center sponsored by the Planetary Society.

A giant screen will broadcast NASA TV programming with video from mission control and Mars images relayed from Pathfinder as soon as they are processed and released.

The festival will include appearances by mission scientists, prominent astronomers and famous science fiction writers. Children can use 16 computers to access remote rover sites around the world.

Adults can tour eight rooms of cutting-edge Space Age wizardry wiz·ard·ry

The JPL Web site features about 1,000 pages, including real-time images from mission control and the nearby Mars Room, where mission engineers have placed a duplicate lander and rover in a sandy, rocky environment for testing purposes during the mission.

The latest images and real-time data from Pathfinder are available, as well as lesson plans and teaching aids for teachers, maps of Mars and Viking images of the landing site.
