MARRIOTT TO MANAGE NEW EGYPTIAN RESORT AT HURGHADA

WASHINGTON, Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Marriott Hotels, Resorts and Suites announced today that it will manage a 270-room beach resort at Hurghada, Egypt, one of the fastest-growing resort destinations on the Red Sea. The seven-story resort is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in 1994. It is owned by the Orient Touristic Development S.A.E.
"Marriott is very pleased to add the Hurghada Beach Resort to our portfolio of deluxe properties in the Middle East and Africa," said Ed Fuller, senior vice president and managing director for Marriott Lodging International. "The resort is a natural complement to our renowned Cairo Marriott and promises to be especially attractive to conference and incentive planners."
The property will be called Marriott's Hurghada Beach Resort. It will feature beachfront, a well-landscaped outdoor courtyard pool area and approximately 2,800 square feet of meeting space.
Its recreational amenities will include two tennis courts, swimming pool, a scuba/water sports center, health club with men's and women's locker rooms and two squash courts.
For dining and entertainment, Marriott's Hurghada Beach Resort will offer two restaurants, a pool snack bar and an entertainment and lobby lounge.
Other amenities include retail shopping space, laundry/valet/guest laundry services, minibars, room service, barber and beauty shop and airline/car rental/tour desk. In addition, a 35- unit apartment complex is planned to augment the facility.
Recognized as offering some of the finest waters for scuba diving in the world, Hurghada is located approximately 350 miles southeast of Cairo and 175 miles northeast of Luxor. It is served by daily scheduled and charter air service and is connected to Cairo and Luxor by a highway system.
The Marriott flag currently files over four deluxe properties in the Middle East and Africa, including Cairo, Amman, Riyadh and Jedda, with an additional hotel, the Dubai Marriott, scheduled to open in 1993.
There are 41 hotels in Marriott's portfolio of international properties, five of which are resorts. Marriott is currently embarked on a global expansion program which is targeted to result in there being at least 100 hotels in its lodging system outside the United States by the turn of the century. Emphasis is being placed on management contract conversions and franchise opportunities for upscale hotels in major gateway cities. Negotiations are underway on a number of properties in Asia, the Caribbean and Europe, and construction will begin in early 1993 on a 400-room deluxe hotel in Jakarta.
