MARRIED 50 YEARS: ALFRED AND MARY BATTLES.

Alfred and Mary Battles of Newbury Park celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a luncheon reception with 200 friends and family members on July 27 at the Christian Church of Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown. , where they renewed their wedding vows.

Alfred was born in Iowa and came to Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  at age 6. He graduated from Belmont High School Belmont High School may refer to:

 and is a veteran of the U.S. Navy in World War II.

Mary Henderson was born in Los Angeles and raised in Burbank. She graduated from John Marshall High School There are several high schools in the United States named after the early United States politician and Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall, including:
  • John Marshall High School (Los Angeles) in the Los Angeles Unified School District of Los Angeles, California
 after moving back to Los Angeles. She enjoyed being home and raising her girls. Both Mary and her husband were active in church activities and worked with youth groups.

Fifty years ago, Alfred took Mary home from a church youth function. He managed to drop her off last and asked her to go to dinner in Chinatown later that week. For a second date, they went to Mount Wilson for the day. That afternoon, he knew she was ``the one'' and proposed to her. It took him six hours to convince her to say yes. The next weekend, they eloped to Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. It is the largest city in Nevada and the center of one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States.  - their third date lasted a long time - and were married on Sept. 20, 1952. They have continued to travel together not only in marriage but throughout the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  and the world. After retirement, their dream of traveling full time in an RV became a reality for seven years.

They have four daughters: Susan Murphy of Thousand Oaks; Laura Bubna of Spokane, Wash.; Margie Brumm of Glendale; and Jean Battles of Colonial Heights, Va. They have 12 grandchildren.
