MARMARA MARINE, INC. WINS BID FOR S.S. UNITED STATES
HISTORIC SHIP TO BE RECONSTRUCTED FOR PASSENGER CRUISES
NEW YORK, April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Fred A. Mayer, chief executive officer of Marmara Marine, Inc., announced that Marmara submitted the $2.6 million winning bid for the S.S. United States, at an auction in Newport News, Va., held April 27.
Mayer also announced that Marmara has been holding ongoing and substantial discussions with a major international investment bank to arrange financing for the refurbishment of the vessel and its return to passenger service.
The 53,000 gross ton, 900 foot, 2l00-passenger ship, formerly the queen of United States Lines -- set a speed record of 35 knots which has never been surpassed. The United States, in service between l952 and l969, could have carried l4,000 troops in a military configuration.
The once-proud queen, which has been moored in a dockyard for over two decades, has been stripped of its lavish appointments.
Mayer has been chief executive officer of Exprinter Cruises for the past 25 years and is also a director of Regency Cruises.
