A federal judge in St. Louis has ruled that a license held by DuPont to sell seeds containing Monsanto's Roundup herbicide-tolerant technology was terminated by the 1999 merger between DuPont and Pioneer Hi-Bred International. The ruling holds that all sales of Roundup Ready soybean and Roundup Ready canola seed by Pioneer since the merger were unauthorized, thereby exposing DuPont to a significant claim by Monsanto for patent infringement or misappropriation misappropriation n. the intentional, illegal use of the property or funds of another person for one's own use or other unauthorized purpose, particularly by a public official, a trustee of a trust, an executor or administrator of a dead person's estate, or by any  of trade secrets. Pioneer plans to appeal the decision.

Cash from StaufferSeeds' operations and other private capital will be pooled and invested in Prodigene, Inc., a Texas-based plant transformation company. Prodigene is the only company to have commercialized proteins from transgenic plants for biopharmaceutical and industrial markets.

Land O'Lakes, Arden Hills, Minn., has completed the purchase of the Kraft Foods, Inc., cheese plant in Melrose, Minn. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. The plant will be owned and operated by Melrose Dairy Proteins LLC, a joint venture of Land O'Lakes and Dairy Farmers of America Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) is an agricultural marketing cooperative owned by about 19,514 members (dairy farmers) representing 11,306 farms in the United States representing one-third of the US milk supply. In 2006 it had $7,898,824,000 in sales. , Inc. The two cooperatives will each hold 50 percent ownership in Melrose Dairy Proteins LLC, while current plant operations, staffing and service to existing customers and producers will continue. Plans are to further upgrade plant technology and tailor ongoing production to market needs. Land O'Lakes has been a long-term supplier of raw milk to the Melrose facility. DFA has significant milk supply in the region.
