MARINERS ROMP TO STAY IN HUNT WIN OVER ANGELS KEEPS DIVISION TITLE IN REACH SEATTLE 21, ANGELS 9.

Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

ANAHEIM - The Seattle Mariners The Seattle Mariners are a professional baseball team based in Seattle, Washington. The Mariners are a member of the Western Division of Major League Baseball's American League. From to the present, the Mariners have played in Safeco Field.  found themselves in a slugfest Saturday afternoon, only their opponent was doing their slugging about 500 miles to the north.

While the Mariners were pounding the Angels 21-9 at Edison Field, the Oakland A's were beating up on the Texas Rangers Texas Rangers, mounted fighting force organized (1835) during the Texas Revolution. During the republic they became established as the guardians of the Texas frontier, particularly against Native Americans.  23-2 at the Oakland Coliseum. And for all their offense, the standings didn't budge - the A's still have a half-game lead in the AL West going into today's regular season-finale.

The A's will play a makeup game Monday at Tampa Bay Tampa Bay, inlet of the Gulf of Mexico, 25 mi (40 km) long and 7 to 12 mi (11.3–19 km) wide, W Fla., separated from the Gulf by numerous small islands; it receives the Hillsborough River. St. , if necessary. If the A's win today and the Mariners lose, no game will be necessary and the A's will be the AL West champion. But with any other combination, the A's will have to play Monday.

As for the Angels, Saturday's game was painful. The 21 runs scored by the Mariners were the most by an Angels opponent in franchise history. The Mariners had 22 hits, including five home runs, two by Alex Rodriguez Alexander Emmanuel Rodriguez (born July 27, 1975 in New York, New York), commonly nicknamed A-Rod, is a Dominican American baseball infielder. He is the starting third baseman for the New York Yankees, after having played shortstop for the Texas Rangers and Seattle , who reached 40 for the third consecutive season. Rodriguez also had seven RBI RBI

, matching a career high.

The Angels' highlights, limited as they were, included Troy Glaus' 47th home run of the season and Darin Erstad's two hits for 239. Erstad now ranks tied with Rod Carew
Rodney Cline "Rod" Carew (born October 1, 1945), is a former Major League Baseball player for the Minnesota Twins and California Angels from 1967 to 1985.

He was born to a Panamanian mother on a train in the town of Gatun, which at that time was in the Panama Canal
for the 14th highest single-season hit total in major-league history.

The victories Saturday by the Mariners and A's cleared up the playoff picture somewhat. Both know if they win today, they're in the playoffs because both would finish ahead of the Indians. The only thing left to be determined would be which team is the division winner and which is the wild card.

, both the A's and Mariners would be in before even their games are finished.

``(The Indians) have to do the scoreboard watching, not us, because we control our own destiny,'' said Rodriguez, who added he didn't expect any surprises today. ``There are no surprises in baseball. We've played 161 games and we still don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

     who's in.''

If both the A's and Mariners get in, it might not matter much who is the division winner and who is the wild card. The division winner will play the struggling but playoff-savvy Yankees in the first round and the wild card will play the young but potent White Sox.

    Mariners manager Lou Piniella

, however, won't allow himself to think past today's game.

``Now it's down to the final day of the season,'' he said. ``We'll get 'em (today). It's been a nice season for us for 161 games. Now we have to finish it off.''

Disappointment can be found in the other clubhouse, where the Angels know that today's game is their last of the season no matter what.

``No doubt it's disappointing,'' Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. ``The only real consolation is knowing we gave it our best effort.
