MARINE BAND PLAYS, FLAGS FLY AT SIMI SCHOOL.

Monday morning's rain didn't dampen spirits at Katherine Elementary School elementary school: see school. , where 600 students were treated to a concert of patriotic songs from the 45-member First Marine Division Band.

Following a flag ceremony with nearly two dozen Marines, Chief Warrant Officer Robert C. Jacob led the band through its paces.

``I think it's very exciting the band is playing,'' said Kaylee Lachmiller, 8, a second-grader.

 and Councilwoman Barbra Williamson were among the officials on hand for the performance, which highlighted the school's Fine Arts Mini-Experience program. The FAME program began six years ago, with committee volunteers selecting an artist and composer to highlight each month.

The featured composer for March is John Philip Sousa, who was a Marine Corps bandleader from 1880-1892 and who wrote more than 100 marches including ``The Stars and Stripes Forever For other uses, see Stars and Stripes Forever (disambiguation).

,'' said Ronda Norling, PTA PTA or parent-teacher association: see parent education.  executive board member and the event organizer.

But when 600 bumper stickers arrived, Norling took a leap of faith and invited the Marine Corps Band to perform. The popular First Division Marine Corps Band, based at Camp Pendleton, appears in more than 400 shows annually.

Making the event even more memorable, the Marine Corps League donated 600 American flags, one for each student, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10049 donated $250 for a lunch for the Marines. Ventura County Fire Stations 41 and 43 fixed the school's flag pole.

``We've had lots of help from everybody,'' said Norling. ``It's been an incredible experience.
