MARINE, JEWELER AND DAD PATRIOTIC CHATSWORTH MAN NEVER KEPT STILL, HELPED OTHERS.

As a Marine veteran who served in World War II, hoisting the American flag on his front yard flagpole was an important morning ritual for Darrel Blauser of Chatsworth, who died March 24 of cancer. He was 82.

"He was very patriotic, very much a Marine. His favorite holiday was the Fourth of July Fourth of July, Independence Day, or July Fourth, U.S. holiday, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Celebration of it began during the American Revolution. ," said his wife, Shirley Conklin Blauser, whom he met through his cousin, one of her classmates Classmates can refer to either:

"We were married on Feb. 19, 1949. It was a date he couldn't forget, the anniversary of his landing on Iwo Jima Iwo Jima (ē`wō jē`mə, ē`wô), Jap. Io-jima, volcanic island, c.8 sq mi (21 sq km), W Pacific, largest and most important of the Volcano Islands. Mt. ," she said.

Blauser joined the Marines in 1942. He served in the South Pacific and made five amphibious landings including in Saipan and Tinian. He was discharged in 1945.

, searching beaches or the High Desert for stones that he crafted into rings, brooches, necklaces, belt buckles and bolo ties.

"His rings were really nice. He used jade, tiger's eye and turquoise," said Shirley Blauser. "He made silver brooches for women's long dresses for women who do the Civil War re-enactments. But most of the jewelry was for family."

Blauser enjoyed beaches, camping, ocean fishing and taking long walks. He grew tomatoes, green peppers and tree fruit, and designed and constructed a goldfish pond with a waterfall in his backyard.

After the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, Blauser helped repair United Methodist Church United Methodist Church, in the United States, religious body formed by the union in 1968 of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church (see Methodism).  in Chatsworth, where he was a member for more than 40 years.

Darrell Burgess Blauser was born July 21, 1923, in Bradford, Pa. He grew up with three sisters and three brothers in Duke Center, Pa., where his father worked in the oil fields. Blauser graduated from Otto Junior-Senior High School in Duke Center.

Blauser is survived by his wife, Shirley; children, Jay, Gary, Carol, Barbara and James; three grandchildren; a sister, Jean Muncey, and a brother, Robert Blauser.

A memorial service was held at United Methodist Church in Chatsworth. Blauser's ashes were scattered at sea. < Donations in his memory may be sent to United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 10824 Topanga Canyon Blvd., Chatsworth 91311.
