MARCIVE Books Commercial Data Servers For OS/390 Based Library Applications; CDS 2000 Supports Leading Library Cataloguing Company To Reduce Overall Computing Costs.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 25, 1998--Commercial Data Servers today announced that its flagship CDS 2000e enterprise server has been installed by MARCIVE, a San Antonio, Texas “San Antonio” redirects here. For other uses, see San Antonio (disambiguation).
San Antonio is the second most populous city in Texas, the third most populous metropolitan area in Texas, and is the seventh most populous city in the United States. As of the 2006 U.S.
based provider of bibliographic services for public and institutional libraries nationwide.

The sale of the CDS 2000e to MARCIVE is one of 15 enterprise servers that CDS has installed since the first of the year in a wide-range of applications ranging from service bureaus to Year 2000 testing facilities. MARCIVE will use the CDS 2000e as its primary computing resource for managing transactions involving a database covering nearly nine million records.

"With the CDS 2000e, we are able to significantly improve the input-output of our computing environment, which is critical because of the batch-nature of our work," said Robert Fleming Robert Fleming is the name of:
  • Robert Fleming (author), American writer of erotic fiction and horror fiction
  • Robert Fleming (composer) (1921–1976), Canadian composer
, president of MARCIVE. "Just as important to the performance is the significant return-on-investment on computer processing that we will realize through the purchase of this system."

Fleming said that the purchase costs of the CDS 2000e will be fully recovered in less than 36 months, due to cost avoidance Cost avoidance is a management accounting term referring to an expense one has avoided incurring. It is commonly used in the field of energy management to describe the energy costs you avoided due to energy management initiatives.  plus the savings accrued from reduced software, cooling, real estate and maintenance costs. After that, all payments end except for a nominal hardware maintenance fee. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  operating system operating system (OS)

"MARCIVE is an excellent example of a user seeking to replace older, non-Year 2000 compliant systems while continuing to maintain the reliability and power of an enterprise server running the latest OS/390 operating system," said Jack Andersen, Senior Vice President of Global Sales for CDS. "We were able to demonstrate a defined and very attractive system payback and offer significant performance improvements at the same time."

Fleming said MARCIVE had considered shifting to another computing platform See platform. , but the cost advantages of the CDS 2000e and ability to upgrade its operating system to OS/390 was "too attractive to pass by."

"In addition to the hard cost advantages provided by the CDS 2000e, the systems small, integrated footprint also made it possible for us to convert more than 1,500 feet of space into other uses," Fleming said.

The MARCIVE application involves a single large database tracking library catalogue numbers along with associated text information. The CDS 2000e provides communication, printer attachment and LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  connectivity. Compile times on the CDS 2000e are 10 times faster than on the replaced system.

The system was sold and installed by DecisionOne, CDS's channel partner specializing in mainframe system replacement. DecisionOne, of Frazer, PA., and CDS provide a unique mainframe support solution for customers with IBM System 43xx, 9221-1xx, 3090 and ES/9000 platforms, as well as certain Hitachi EX platforms. The two companies, recommending users consider migrating to CDS 2000e Enterprise Servers, which currently offer among the lowest costs of ownership (TCO (1) (Total Cost of Ownership) The cost of using a computer. It includes the cost of the hardware, software and upgrades as well as the cost of the inhouse staff and/or consultants that provide training and technical support. These servers are used in the manufacturing, retail and banking industries, as well as in data centers serving a wide variety of businesses.
