MARCH SALES ROSE 2.9 PERCENT AT WOOLWORTH CORPORATION

 NEW YORK, April /PRNewswire/ -- Woolworth Corporation (NYSE: Z) reported today that total sales for the five weeks ended April 3, 1993, rose 2.9 percent to $832 million from $809 million in the comparable year-earlier period.
 Domestic sales for the five-week period increased 1.6 percent to $487 million from $479 million, and foreign sales, expressed in U.S. dollars, rose 4.9 percent. If foreign exchange rates had remained constant, foreign sales would have increased 7.2 percent and total sales would have increased 3.9 percent. Domestic comparable store sales for the five-week period declined 1.3 percent.
 For the cumulative nine weeks ended April 3, total sales rose 1.7 percent to $1,426 million from $1,402 million in the corresponding year-earlier period.
 Domestic sales for the nine-week period increased 1.0 percent to $838 million from $829 million, and foreign sales, expressed in U.S. dollars, rose 2.7 percent. If foreign exchange rates had remained constant, foreign sales would have increased 5.9 percent and total sales would have increased 3.0 percent.
 Domestic comparable store sales for the nine-week period declined 2.2 percent.
 Harold E. Sells, chairman and chief executive officer, said, "Unusually severe weather conditions in many areas of the United States during March negatively impacted sales in all domestic operating divisions."
