MARCH ELECTION FILING PERIOD OPENS.

The filing period opened Monday for candidates seeking to run in the March 6 election, with a number of incumbents making sure they followed the procedures to qualify for the ballot.

Councilmen Tom Labonge Tom LaBonge (b. Los Angeles 1953), member of the Los Angeles City Council representing the 4th district. He has served since 2001, taking over the position upon the death of John Ferraro. , Greig Smith Greig Smith is a Los Angeles City Councilman, representing the 12th District, which includes Granada Hills, Northridge and other parts of the Western San Fernando Valley. Smith is also a reserve officer for the Los Angeles Police Department.  and school board member Marguerite LaMotte were among the first incumbents to file for re-election; even-numbered City Council districts and odd-numbered school board seats are up for election.

The March ballot will likely include a race to fill the District 7 seat for Councilman Alex Padilla Alex Padilla is a politician in California. He was elected as the State Senator for the 20th District of California in November 2006 and was inaugurated in early December. In order to enter the Senate he had to resign as Councilman for the 7th District on the Los Angeles City , who is widely expected to win election today to the state Senate.

After declaring their intent to run, potential candidates have until Dec. 6 to file their nominating petitions. Candidates must collect the signatures of at least 1,000 registered voters and pay a $300 filing fee, or collect 2,000 signatures and avoid the fee.

A great deal of interest surrounds the board of education election and whether Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Antonio Ramon Villaraigosa (born Antonio (Tony) Ramon Villar, Jr. on January 23, 1953) is the mayor of Los Angeles, California. He is the first Latino mayor of Los Angeles since Cristobal Aguilar in 1872.  will seek to oust board members who fought his effort to gain control of the district.

As of Monday afternoon, loan consultant Joey Mandingo White and educator Neal B. Kleiner had filed for the seat being vacated by incumbent Michael Lansing; teacher Louis Pugliese had filed for the seat held by incumbent John Lauritzen; and administrator Luis Sanchez Luis Sanchez or Luis Sánchez can refer to various people:
  • Luis Sánchez (Luis Mercedes "Escoba" Sanchez), baseball player
  • Luis Alberto Sánchez, Peruvian lawyer
  • Luis Augusto Sánchez, Colombian chess player
  • Luis León Sánchez, Spanish cyclist
 had filed for the seat held by David Tokofsky.

In other City Council races filers include activist Mervin Evans for the 8th District seat of Councilman Bernard Parks; and psychologist Mike Manley for the 10th District seat of Councilman Herb Wesson.
