And though the 1996 Marauders (5-5, 4-4) fell one win short of meeting their goal of a winning record, Coach Brent Carder feels this team exemplified that reputation. ``I believe this team kind of re-established the Marauder MARAUDER. One who, while employed in the army as a soldier, commits a larceny or robbery in the neighborhood of the camp, or while wandering away from the army. Merl. But this year, even though our record doesn't show it, we played just as good as we did prior to (these last two years).'' The Marauders were one fumble away from a winning record. In Saturday's 16-14 loss at Chaffey, quarterback Shawn Sharp and running back Jamar Day fumbled an exchange on the Chaffey 5-yard line with just over one minute to play in the game. ``All we had to do was not fumble and kick a field goal for the win,'' Carder said. ``But luck was not with us at that point. After that game, the team steadily improved, which Carder said was both a credit to the work of his coaching staff and his players' desire. While the losses added up to a .500 season, the Marauders didn't fall to any teams with lesser talent than them. In fact, the five teams they lost to had a combined record of 40-10. On the positive side, when the Marauders won, they often won big. Besides a 22-13 win over Southwestern, Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. Freshman running back Lafayette Bailey finished the year second in the Foothill Conference with 864 yards and 11 touchdowns, and he led it with 8.6 yards per carry. Right behind him was freshman Jamar Day, who had 811 yards, 10 touchdowns and a 5.9 yards per carry average. ``The two freshmen took a little while to get their feet wet but they had good seasons once they did,'' Carder said. ``If you're talking about improvement on offense, you have to credit the offensive line. They did a real fine job.'' Defensively, the Marauders weren't big, but they were quick and aggressive. The rush defense finished second in the conference, holding opponents to 2.5 yards per carry and 86.5 yards per game, while the pass defense improved from some early season letdowns, finishing fifth at 174.2 yards per game. ``The defense lived to play football and it showed,'' Carder said. ``We had a lot of sophomores on defense and they definitely wanted to have a respectable season.'' Overall, the defense finished third in the conference at 260.7 yards per game and over its last five games it allowed 15.8 points per game. Carder's offensive philosophy is to run and wear the opponent down and that was reflected in the two quarterback's passing statistics. Shawn Sharp, who split time with Rocque Sandoval until Sandoval got hurt and missed the final four games, passed for 669 yards and seven touchdowns, while completing 41.7 percent of his passes and throwing eight interceptions. Sandoval was 27-for-57 (47.4 percent), for 247 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions, as Antelope Valley finished eighth out of nine conference teams with 91.5 yards per game through the air. But you just can't tell for certain what exactly that will be.''
