The Bee, held every year since 1989, is open to students in the fourth through eighth grade in participating American .

The runners-up at Garden Grove were fourth-grader Jacob Hartley and fifth-grader Natalie Raffaeli.

The National Geography Society developed the Geographic Bee in response to a growing concern about the lack of geographical knowledge among young people in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. This year's bee began in November for thousands of schools around the United States and the five U.S. territories. The school winners, including Nguyen, will now take a written test. In each state and territory, the top 100 performers will compete in a bee April 7.
