MANY A KILL BY GLEDHILL; TAFT VOLLEYBALL TEAM LED BY BASKETBALL CONVERT.

Byline: Brian The name Brian (sometimes spelled Bryan) comes from an Irish backround. It is of Celtic origin and its meaning may be "hill" or "strong, noble, and high"[1].  Dalziel Dalziel, Dalzell or Dalyell is a common Scottish surname. It is pronounced deeyel (IPA /diː'ɛl/), though a pronunciation with /z/ may now also be heard outside Scotland.  Daily News Staff Writer

Taft junior Mike Gledhill The term Gledhill may refer to different things:
  • The Northern English family name Gledhill and variants such as Gleadle and Gleadhill that are derived from geographical names.
got a chance to prove himself last volleyball volleyball, outdoor or indoor ball and net game played on a level court. An upright net, 3 ft (or 1 m) high, the top of which stands 8 ft (2.43 m) from the ground for men, 7 ft 4 1/8 in (2.  season.

It was the second-to-last match of the regular season against Kennedy, and Gledhill, a 6-foot-6 reserve middle blocker, made an immediate impact.

``Mike was on the bench most of the year and one of my players was having a bad game,'' coach Doug DOUG Dumb Old Utility Guy  Magorien said. ``So I put Mike in and he came in and started blocking balls and had some solid hits.''

Gledhill never returned to the bench. He started throughout the playoffs and into the City finals, where Taft lost to Palisades Palisades, cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River, NE N.J. and SE N.Y., extending from N of Jersey City, N.J., to the vicinity of Piermont, N.Y., with a general altitude of from 350 ft to 550 ft (107–168 m). . And this season Gledhill is one of the leaders on a team that is hoping to make a return trip to the City-title match.

``In the City finals, Mike was one of the best players on the court,'' Magorien said. ``He's a quiet guy in terms of his demeanor The outward physical behavior and appearance of a person.

, but he's a very intense player in regards to how he competes. He makes a big difference on our team.''

The left-handed-hitting Gledhill moved from middle to outside hitter this season. The only reason he wasn't there a year ago was All-Area and All-City player Joe Nargi, who graduated last season.

But being on the outside isn't something that's new to Gledhill.

``I played a few games there last season,'' he said. ``But I feel better there (than at middle blocker), because I like swinging from the outside. Being a lefty in the middle, it's hard to hit.''

In 1999, Gledhill has a .365 hitting percentage and a team-high 102 kills, which is twice as many as the No. 2 player. He is second on the team in blocks with 20.

``He gets twice as many sets because for one he's a good attacker,'' Magorien said. ``And two, because we set him out of the back row. He's very comfortable with being an outside hitter. Being a lefty, it's natural for him.''

Volleyball is a new sport for Gledhill, who didn't pick the game up until he came to Taft. And if it wasn't for his basketball coach, Gledhill probably wouldn't be playing volleyball.

``My basketball coach told me when I was a freshman that I should try out for volleyball,'' Gledhill said. ``He said that I was tall and that it would help me with my vertical leap.''

Gledhill never returned to basketball. Instead, volleyball has become his sport of choice.

``I love it,'' he said. ``I was never really exposed to volleyball. I wasn't aware of how fun it was.''

Gledhill is also exceptional in the classroom, holding close to a 4.0 GPA GPA

``He's a very intelligent and bright kid,'' Magorien said.

``I guess my parents put me in the mode when I was young to get things done,'' Gledhill said. ``I try to utilize my time in class and I do what I have to do to get things done.''

Gledhill hopes for another return trip to the City finals so the Toreadors can redeem redeem v. to buy back, as when an owner who had mortgaged his/her real property pays off the debt. But for now, he and his teammates are looking to capture their second straight Northwest Valley Conference title.

``I think our chances are pretty good,'' Gledhill said of reaching the finals. ``We've already proved that we can beat the best team (Granada Hills on March 24). That was a big step for us. It was a confidence builder.''
