MANVILLE SELLS REMEDIATED CALIFORNIA SUPERFUND SITE TO ARCO
CARSON, Calif., Dec. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Denver-based Manville Corp. (NYSE: MVL) announced today that it has sold a 50-acre remediated superfund site in Carson to Atlantic Richfield Co. (ARCO) (NYSE: ARC). The sale also includes the transfer of all water rights at the site. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.
Manville operated a pipe plant and insulation manufacturing facility from the 1930's until operations ceased there in 1982. Two years later, the empty site was placed on the California EPA's Superfund list of hazardous waste sites to be cleaned up. After six years and more than $10 million, Manville successfully cleaned up the site, with a certification of completion granted by the state on June 30, 1990.
"We are pleased that this 50-acre industrial site may once again be put to productive economic use, benefitting not only the city of Carson, but Los Angeles county and area citizens as well," said Tom Stephens, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Manville. "Although a clean-up is never easy, I believe the success of the Carson project demonstrates in real terms that Manville is serious about its commitment to the environment."
Manville Corp. is an international holding company with two principal subsidiaries -- Manville Sales Corp. and Riverwood International Corp. Products sold by Manville Sales Corp. include building and engineered products and roofing systems. Riverwood International is a vertically integrated forest products company providing machinery-based packaging systems to customers worldwide.
