 MANNING ELECTED PRESIDENT AND CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER
 OF UNIVERSAL FOODS
 MILWAUKEE, Jan. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of directors of Universal Foods Corporation (NYSE: UFC) has elected Kenneth P. Manning president and chief operating officer of the company effective today.
 In making the announcement Guy A. Osborn, chairman and chief executive officer, said, "Ken's promotion recognizes his contribution to the excellent growth of the company over the past several years and puts in place the structure for continuing that growth in the future."
 Manning joined the company as group vice president in 1987. He was promoted to executive vice president and became a director of the company in 1989.
 Prior to joining Universal Foods, he was president of Ambrosia Chocolate Company, a division of W.R. Grace and Company. During his 14 years with Grace he held various positions of increasing managerial responsibility. Earlier in his career, Manning worked for a general management consulting firm and IBM.
 He holds a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N.Y., and a master's degree in business administration from American University, Washington. He attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned an ensign in the United States Navy. Since completing his active duty in 1967, he has served in the Naval Air Reserve and currently holds the rank of Rear Admiral.
 Manning serves on the board of trustees of Cardinal Stritch College. He is former chairman and current member of the Advisory Council to the School of Business at Marquette University. He is also a member of the Navy League, the United States Naval Institute and the Naval Research Association.
 Universal Foods is an international manufacturer and marketer of value-added food products. These include food flavors, food colors, the world's most diversified lines of frozen potato and yeast products, and dehydrated vegetables.
