MANATEE COUNTY JURY AWARDS JUDGE $322,000 IN SUIT AGAINST OPHTHALMOLOGIST

MIAMI, May 26 /PRNewswire/ -- A retired judge was awarded $322,000 by a Manatee County jury which found that an ophthalmologist had wrongly implanted an intraocular lens during eye surgery.
The physician put the lens in backwards. The surgery impaired the judge's vision and caused permanent injury.
Judge Joseph J. Lozo, 68, who served on the bench for 19 years, repeatedly complained to Dr. Richard Hector about his vision and pain after the surgery.
Miami attorney Thomas A. Culmo, who represented Judge Lozo in the action applauded the verdict handed down last week.
"The verdict was extremely fair in light of Judge Lozo's permanent visual impairment. Obviously, the jurors appreciated the significance of the injuries Dr. Hector's negligence caused Judge Lozo," Culmo said.
