Byline: Karen Maeshiro Staff Writer

LANCASTER - Former postal worker A postal worker is one who works for a post office, such as a mail carrier. In the U.S., postal workers are represented by the National Postal Mail Handlers Union - NPMHU and the American Postal Workers Union, part of the AFL-CIO.  Jeffrey Peitz, charged with murdering his wife in 1994 but never convicted, was ordered Wednesday to stand trial on charges he placed fake bombs at a Lancaster post office.

Peitz, 47, of Quartz Hill was bound over for trial after a five-day preliminary hearing during which Peitz' former supervisor testified that a man videotaped by a surveillance camera as he carried a package into the post office appeared to be Peitz.

Peitz of Quartz Hill has pleaded not guilty to charges of planting six false bombs at the post office between December 2000 and February 2003, making a criminal threat against the former supervisor in a message inside one package and possessing a firearm firearm, device consisting essentially of a straight tube to propel shot, shell, or bullets by the explosion of gunpowder. Although the Chinese discovered gunpowder as early as the 9th cent., they did not develop firearms until the mid-14th cent.  in violation of probation.

Peitz had been convicted in February 2001 of obstruction of mail and placed on probation, officials said. Peitz remained in custody in lieu of $5 million bail.

Retired postal supervisor Hazel Love testified during Peitz's preliminary hearing that - based on the person's posture, gait and build - Peitz was the person who appeared in the surveillance video taken in February.

Love also testified that Peitz was disrespectful dis·re·spect·ful

Officials said Peitz is responsible for placing six packages filled with carved-up soap and detergent and containing threats against postal workers and President George W. Bush at the Lancaster post office on 20th Street West.

Some of the packages contained rhymed threats, including, ``Roses are red, violets are blue, now my wrath is upon you.'' Messages in the packages also made references to biblical passages, the destruction of the World Trade Center and the war in Iraq.

Authorities said a search of Peitz' home in April turned up clear packing tape, felt-tip pens and soap bars Soap bar or Soapbar may refer to:

In 1994, Peitz was charged with murdering his then-wife, who was shot to death while watching television in their Palmdale home, but was never convicted. Each of three trials ended in deadlocked juries. Prosecutors say that investigation is still open.
