MAN TO FACE 5 CHARGES IN OFFICER'S DEATH : SPECIAL ALLEGATIONS COULD LEAD TO DEATH PENALTY FOR SUSPECT.

Ventura County prosecutors Friday filed murder and other charges that could bring the death penalty for Michael Johnson Michael Johnson or Mike Johnson may refer to:

  • Mike Johnson (bassist) (born 1965)
  • Michael Johnson (athlete) (born 1967), multiple Olympic and World Championship winner
 if the Meiners Oaks man is convicted of killing sheriff's Deputy Peter Aguirre.

Johnson, 48, faces five charges and eight special allegations in the fatal shooting of Aguirre and a gunfight with a second deputy while the officers were responding to an emergency call Wednesday evening. Johnson also is charged with kidnapping and raping his wife on the same day.

Aguirre, 26, died about an hour after he was shot three times while standing inside the doorway of the home Johnson had been sharing with his wife the past several weeks. Aguirre, a two-year veteran who was completing field training, never pulled his gun from its holster, sheriff's officials said.

Sheriff's officials said they are helping Aguirre's immediate family cope with his death. The deputy is survived by his wife, Enedina, and their daughter, Gabriela.

Prosecutors also charge that Johnson was convicted in a U.S. District Court in January 1974 on a charge of possession with intent to distribute an illegal drug.
