SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - A Valencia man who was being questioned by police Wednesday escaped from the Santa Clarita sheriff's station but was captured when a drugstore employee tackled the suspect as he was being chased by deputies, authorities said.

Gardner was being questioned after he had been arrested on a warrant for petty theft and had been left alone in an unlocked interview room for two minutes when he escaped, police said.
