MAN SHOT IN FACE AT TRACK MEET; 3 SUSPECTS FLEE CLEVELAND HIGH AFTER ASSAULT.

Byline: Jesse Hiestand Daily News Staff Writer

An 18-year-old man was shot in the face Friday during a track meet at Cleveland High School, just as runners were waiting for the sound of a starter's pistol to launch the last race of the day.

The wounded man Wounded Man in English, 傷追い人 (Kizuoibito) in Japanese, is a seinen manga written by Kazuo Koike and drawn in a Gekiga style by artist Ryoichi Ikegami.  was not immediately identified and was not a student at Cleveland or its rival at Friday's meet, Granada Hills High School Granada Hills Charter High School (Granada Hills High School) is a public, charter, co-educational, secondary school consisting of students in grades 9-12. Paul Marks of the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Police Department's West Valley Division.

Police said the gunfire came from three men in a green Ford Mustang For other Ford Mustang models and concepts, see .

that had driven onto the campus about 4:35 p.m.

The victim and his cousin were walking to the track on a service road adjacent to Verity Field when they got into an argument and fight with the men in the green Mustang mustang [Sp. mesteño=a stray], small feral horse of the W United States. Mustangs are descended from escaped Native American horses, which in turn were descended from horses of North African blood, brought to the New World by the Spanish c.1500. , he said.

At least two shots were fired and the suspects drove away, he said. Police are unsure whether the shooting was gang-related.

``They were shooting at the victim, and it doesn't appear this was meant to disrupt'' the track meet, Marks said.

In fact, the bullets apparently flew away from the field, with one round found in a concrete wall across from the track, Marks said. Other than the 400 or so people at the track meet, the school was empty because it was a pupil-free day.

The shooting occurred as runners were in the blocks for the start of the last race of the day, the men's 1600-meter relay, said Granada Hills assistant track coach Bob Weinberg.

``Suddenly, we heard three shots. At first, we thought it was just a false start. But then, a couple of people started shouting, Get down, and pretty soon, people were falling like dominoes,'' he said.

when she heard a popping sound, which students at first shrugged off as someone playing with a starter's pistol.

``I said, Oh, it's for real all right. Get down,'' she said.

Allan J. Weiner, Cleveland's assistant principal, said athletes and spectators were escorted off the field as he gave first aid to the man who was shot.

``He wanted to get up and go,'' Weiner said. ``He was just a young man full of pep and vinegar.''
