MAN SHOT BY CHP CRITICAL FOLLOWING A 50-MILE PURSUIT, OFFICERS FIRED AFTER DRIVING REFUSED TO GET OUT OF HIS TRUCK.

``The driver started inching forward. Officers fearing for their lives ... shot him,'' CHP spokeswoman Officer Wendy Hahn said.

Hahn said sheriff's homicide detectives instructed the CHP not to release the man's name. Sheriff's officials referred inquiries to the CHP.

Recorded by television news helicopters, the chase started just after 7 p.m. Tuesday when a CHP officer tried to pull over the Toyota pickup truck for an unsafe lane change on Victory Boulevard Victory Boulevard is a major thoroughfare on Staten Island, measuring approximately 8.0 miles (12.87 km) and stretching from the west shore community of Travis to the upper east shore communities of St. George and Tompkinsville.  near Woodley Avenue, officials said.

The truck got off the freeway at Pearblossom Highway. At the Four Points intersection, a CHP car nudged the truck as it made a left turn onto Fort Tejon Road.

The truck spun into a field beside the road, and CHP cars closed in. At least five officers pointed pistols at the truck as its wheels spun and it moved back and forth.

Hahn said she did not know how many officers fired. Three bullet holes were visible in the windshield.

A CHP officer pulled the wounded man from the car, and paramedics took him to Antelope Valley Hospital.
