MAN PLEADS NOT GUILTY TO MANSLAUGHTER IN CRASH.

LANCASTER - A felony vehicular manslaughter vehicular manslaughter n. the crime of causing the death of a human being due to illegal driving of an automobile, including gross negligence, drunk driving, reckless driving, or speeding.  charge has been filed against a Palmdale teenager as a result of a head-on crash that killed another teenager.

 at more than 80 mph on two-lane 30th Street West when he pulled out to pass other vehicles and slammed head-on into a Ford pickup driven by Anthony Leano, 17, of Palmdale, officials said.

Cano pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a charge of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence An indifference to, and a blatant violation of, a legal duty with respect to the rights of others.

Gross negligence is a conscious and voluntary disregard of the need to use reasonable care, which is likely to cause foreseeable grave injury or harm to persons, property, or
, officials said. No drug or alcohol use has been alleged.

Cano surrendered to the court and was taken into custody. Bail was set at $50,000.

``We sent him a letter giving him a court date. He showed up for his court date and answered to the charges,'' Campbell said.

Cano was treated at Antelope Valley Hospital for what deputies described as minor injuries.

The crash occurred just before 4:30 p.m. Nov. 18 on 30th Street West south of Avenue L-8. The impact caused Leano's Ford F150 truck to flip onto its side and he was fatally injured despite wearing a seat belt, deputies said.

Cano's Mustang spun several times and tossed out one of the passengers, deputies said.

Flying debris from the crash caused minor damage to two other vehicles.
