VENTURA - Just days before his trial was scheduled to start, David Alvarez pleaded guilty Friday to first-degree murder in the strangulation strangulation /stran·gu·la·tion/ (strang?gu-la´shun)

Alvarez's surprise plea ended a two-year nightmare that began Dec. 20, 1998, when the Ojai girl failed to come home from a friend's house where she was supposed to be spending the night. Michael Katz, the deputy attorney general who prosecuted the case, said defense attorney James Farley

``I'm very pleased that we accomplished three goals in this case,'' Katz said after a hearing Friday, when Alvarez formally pleaded guilty to murder in exchange for prosecutors dropping charges of attempted rape and making terrorist threats.

``There was justice for the victims' families. The defendent was punished for his behavior. And society was protected.

``The reason we accepted the plea is we believe that, based on the sentence that he will receive, he will never get out of prison,'' Katz said.

Alvarez, 23, could have been sentenced to life without parole had he been convicted of the original charges. Under the plea bargain, he faces a term of 25 years-to-life in prison when he is sentenced March 30.

Katz said he doubted that the state Parole Board pa`role´ board`

will ever allow Alvarez to go free.

``Because his conduct in this case was so bad, we believe they will never grant him parole," he said.

authorities, Alvarez met Manley the night of Dec. 19, 1998, when she was spending the night with a girlfriend. Manley went with Alvarez and a friend of his to a local mini-mart to buy wine coolers, then to the defendant's mobile home to drink.

The friend told police that he last saw Manley headed to a back bedroom with Alvarez, who bragged that he and the girl were going to have sex.

Manley's parents reported her missing when she failed to come home as expected the next day, and the Ojai community mounted an intense search for the girl in the days leading up to Christmas 1998.

Suspicion quickly focused on Alvarez, who was arrested Dec. 21, on suspicion of making terrorist threats against customers at the mini-mart.

And as hundreds of volunteers scoured the rough terrain around Ojai, an attorney for Alvarez negotiated with prosecutors, trying to extract promise that they wouldn't seek the death penalty if he cooperated.

But the District Attorney's Office refused, and on Dec. 26, 1998, Alvarez led authorities to Manley's bruised, naked body, whic was hidden in a drainage pipe north of Ojai.

The District Attorney's Office ultimately turned the prosecution of Alvarez over to the state Attorney General's Office because District Attorney Michael Bradbury was close friends with Alvarez' wealthy parents.

Bradbury was out of town and unavailable for comment on the plea bargain. Richard Holmes Richard Holmes is the name of:
