near a Smart and Final store in the 19700 block of Sherman Way, said Capt. Jim Cansler, commander of the West Valley Division.

The man fled the scene on foot and was shot dead a few blocks away, at Madora Avenue and Cantlay Street, about 4 p.m., Cansler said.

Police had not yet identified the man by late Sunday, describing him only as a Latino in his early 20s.

``He was telling the officers, 'I'll stab you, I'll kill you, I won't be taken alive,''' Cansler said. ``Then he comes at them with a pair of scissors.''

The suspect then began lunging at officers and was shot after he cut one of the officers in the head and moved toward him with the scissors, Cansler said.

``The officer stumbled back after he was cut, and the suspect lunged at him again,'' he said. ``At that point the other officers shot the suspect, and he died at the scene.''

``We heard a quick pop, pop, pop and ran outside,'' Robertson said. ``Then we saw the cops handcuffing a man, who we later found out was dead.''

One woman and several children witnessed the shooting, Robertson said.

Robertson's daughter, Jackie, said she was upset after the shooting and called everyone she knew.

``I've never seen a dead body or even heard gunshots before,'' she said. ``Then I started praying for the dead man. Even though he was bad, I hope his soul rests in peace.''
