Ruby has a history of stroke; the prosecution maintains that her faculties are diminished and that Brown benefited financially from that situation. ``We're saying she did have the mental capacity to understand what she was doing,'' Schwartz said. ``She felt very close to Mr. Brown. He was like an adopted brother or an adopted son to her,'' the attorney said. ``She felt a great deal of affection for him,'' Schwartz added. ``Her hope was that Mr. Brown would carry on her legacy of community involvement in the Santa Clarita Valley. She had a long history of philanthropic and community involvement.'' Ruby was voted Santa Clarita Valley Woman of the Year in 1983 by a committee of past honorees.
