MAN FOUND GUILTY IN FATAL SHOOTING OF BROTHER-IN-LAW.

Byline: Naush Boghossian Staff Writer

GLENDALE - A Glendale man was convicted Friday of first-degree murder in the shooting death of his brother-in-law in 2001, and faces 50 years to life in prison, officials said.

Harutune Nipiossian, 44, was found guilty of shooting Armen Blkhoyan, 38, on April 12, 2001, as the two argued inside a truck in the 100 block of Belmont Street. He is scheduled to be sentenced May 7.

``I am absolutely thrilled with the verdict,'' prosecutor prosecutor

Marian Thompson said. ``It was the appropriate verdict because it was premeditated murder Premeditated murder is the crime of wrongfully causing the death of another human being (also known as murder) after rationally considering the timing or method of doing so, in order to either increase the likelihood of success, or to evade detection or apprehension. .''

The prosecution argued that Nipiossian, who had been separated from his wife for two years, felt the woman's brother was thwarting thwart

``The motive for the murder was that the defendant believed the victim was responsible for the failure of his marriage,'' Thompson said. ``The defendant believed that if not for the victim's financial and emotional support for his sister, his wife would have taken him back.''

A few months before the murder, Blkhoyan had given his sister a car and a cellular phone.

``That was probably the straw that broke the camel's back The idiom the straw that broke the camel's back is from an Arab proverb about loading up a camel beyond its capacity to move. This is a reference to any process by which cataclysmic failure (a broken back) is achieved by a seemingly inconsequential addition (a single straw). , because these two things gave her independence,'' Thompson said.

The defense argued that Nipiossian was mentally ill and could not have planned the murder. Attorneys for Nipiossian could not be reached Friday.

The victim's mother and sister broke down into tears when the verdict was announced, Thompson said.

``They were overwhelmed o·ver·whelm

by the verdict. It was something they were waiting for the last three years,'' Thompson said.

Thompson described Blkhoyan as a hardworking man with a wife and two children of his own who was simply trying to help take care of his sister.
