MAN FACES TRIAL TODAY IN SLAYING OF FAMILY.

Opening statements were scheduled to begin today in Van Nuys Superior Court for a triple murder that destroyed a family four years ago and rocked a quiet Sun Valley community with violence.

Julian Arturo Beltran, 32, faces three counts of murder for the 2002 slayings of estranged es·trange

 girlfriend Mariana Michelle Barahona, 24, and the couple's two daughters, Marissa Beltran, 6, and Natalie Beltran, 2.

The couple had an eight-year relationship, but they were separated at the time of the murder. Beltran had walked out on the family three months before, authorities said.

Police said Beltran returned to their rented house on the 7400 block of Craner Avenue on Jan.23, 2002, and stabbed the three females to death.

Deputies said Beltran was likely trying to commit suicide-by-cop by approaching police with a weapon in the expectation that authorities would shoot him. Instead, they fired bean bag rounds at Beltran.

During his arrest, police said Beltran admitted to the killings.
