``The defendant picked up the pig in the child's arms and threw it against a bedroom wall,'' Deputy District Attorney Kelly Cromer said. ``The pig fell to the ground motionless and the defendant picked up the pig and threw it against the wall again.''

Cruz had grabbed the animal after the woman told her son to get help during the argument, Cromer said. Cromer said Cruz told the boy, ``If you go, I will kill you.''

Cruz and the woman had been living together in the 38000 block of Fifth Street East for more than two years, officials said.

The incident occurred about 1:30 a.m. Aug. 30, officials said. Cruz was arrested after the apartment manager called sheriff's deputies.

Cruz is now in custody in Riverside County, where he was wanted on suspicion of running an illegal chop shop operation - a place where stolen vehicles were dismantled for parts.

Charges were filed this week in Antelope Municipal Court accusing him of child abuse, animal cruelty and terrorist threats. Prosecutors said that Cruz faces up to six years in prison if convicted of the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region.
