MAN, 84, KILLED IN CRASH AFTER CAR VEERS ACROSS I-5.

CASTAIC -- An 84-year-old Fountain Valley man was killed and his passenger injured Monday morning when their sedan overturned after veering across Interstate 5's northbound lanes and hitting another car.

The woman driving the other car was also injured, and a third vehicle received minor damage from hitting crash debris, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The dead man's name was not immediately released pending notification of relatives.

His passenger was identified as Shirley Sprang, 83, of Fountain Valley, who officials said suffered moderate injuries.

The other car's driver, Mary Robinson, 44, of Rocklin, also suffered moderate injuries, officials said. Both women were taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.

The Fountain Valley man's 2006 Toyota Avalon was driving north just before 6:30 a.m. near Parker Road in the right lane when, for unknown reasons, it veered across all the lanes and hit Robinson's 2006 Lincoln Zephyr, CHP officials said.

Both cars overturned; Robinson's car ended up on its wheels in the median and the Avalon came to rest on its roof in traffic lanes.

The debris damaged a 2006 Chevrolet Colorado driven by Joaquin Rodriguez, 45, of Norwalk.
