MALL TO ADAPT TO NEW REALITY ALL-NEW GROWTH PLAN COMING FOR VALENCIA TOWN CENTER.

Byline: Eugene Tong Staff Writer

VALENCIA - The joint developers have withdrawn plans submitted to Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. ``It's just been taking longer than we anticipated,'' she said. ``Rather than be under the deadline of our old submittal, which no longer reflects what is likely to happen there, we've withdrawn the old submittal and will submit new plans shortly.

``We want to submit something that's more based in reality, rather than just a placeholder place·hold·er

The news comes after Cincinnati-based Federated Connected and treated as one. Its headquarters moved to St. Louis, Missouri in 1905, and the company went public in 1911.  for $11 billion and announced it will convert Robinsons-May stores in California into Macy's stores.

The Robinsons-May that has anchored the Valencia Town Center since it opened in the early 1990s is tapped to change nameplates in fall 2006, Federated officials said Friday.

The conversion left a hole in Newhall Land's plans. The planners had been courting Macy's, as well as Nordstrom, as potential anchors in the proposed 600,000-square-foot expansion.

``The department-store world has changed,'' Lauffer said. ``There is some updated thinking in the retail world about anchors - whether it's a department store, food-related or entertainment-related (mall).''

Besides accommodating changes at Federated, mall planners must contend with last year's $11 billion merger of Sears, Roebuck & Co. and Kmart, said Carrie Rogers, Santa Clarita's city economic development manager. A Sears store is another anchor at the Town Center.

``You have a lot of players in this little chess game,'' Rogers said. ``It's going to take awhile to flesh this out.''

Lauffer said a new expansion plan could be ready in roughly six months.

``We want to have something ready that is both doable and will meet some long-term needs - a full master planning of the Town Center,'' she said.
