MALL OF AMERICA OPENS

 MALL OF AMERICA OPENS
BLOOMINGTON, Minn., Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Mall of America, the

nation's largest enclosed retail and entertainment complex, opened today in this suburb of the Twin Cities.
Developed by Melvin Simon & Associates, Indianapolis, the $625 million, 4.2-million-square-foot Mall of America opened with four department stores and approximately 70 percent of its total specialty store space in operation. Approximately 10 percent of additional retail space is under construction and expected to open by the end of the year.
"Mall of America is the most exciting development on the retail landscape today," said Herbert Simon, president of Melvin Simon & Associates. "We are particularly proud of Mall of America's success story. With more than 1.1 million square feet leased, Mall of America opens with the largest number of retailers ever to open on one day in a single location.
"Mall of America meets the demands of today's value- and quality- conscious families," he added. "Nowhere else can they find this unparalleled combination of retail and entertainment, this level of service or this array of stores."
Mall of America is anchored by Bloomingdale's, Macy's, Nordstrom and Sears, the first time this combination of anchors has shared a site. In addition, Mall of America has more than 300 specialty stores.
The complex has as its centerpiece Knott's Camp Snoopy, a seven-acre indoor theme park, brought to Mall of America by Knott's Berry Farm. The park is designed to look like a north woods park with 400 trees and 30,000 plants, a mountain and a four-story waterfall. Knott's Camp Snoopy features over 50 rides, attractions and venues.
Other attractions include the nation's first LEGO Imagination Center, a 6,400-square-foot free display of more than 30 life-size exhibits made entirely of LEGO blocks by Danish master builders, and Golf Mountain, an 18-hole miniature golf course. An entertainment district features nine nightclubs, sports bars and the Gatlin Brother's Music City, a country music show bar. General Cinema will also open a 14-screen theater.
Mall of America is owned by Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of New York, Melvin Simon & Associates and Triple Five Corporation of Edmonton, Alberta. It was developed and will be managed by Melvin Simon & Associates.
Other innovative features at Mall of America include the shopping center industry's first in-house recycling center; and entrepreneur's program designed to foster and introduce new retailing concepts; and a comprehensive customer service program.
Customer service amenities include US West cellular phone and pager rental, a people-moving tram, a computerized messaging center, foreign language interpretation, a "M'all in One" shopping service, and family rooms that give parents the privacy to care for their children.
The center is designed to be very accessible for the differently abled, and offers free use of wheelchairs, telephone devices for the deaf and design features that are in keeping with the American With Disabilities Act. While Mall of America has nearly 13,000 free parking spaces, the center has worked in conjunction with the Metropolitan Transit Commission to encourage use of mass transit for employees and visitors.
More than 6,000 construction workers helped to build Mall of America. At opening, the center is employing more than 7,000 people. Once fully occupied, more than 10,000 permanent full- and part-time positions will have been created.
In addition to job creation and generating significant local and state tax revenues, Mall of America is expected to generate nearly 40 million visits annually by 1996, creating an economic multiplier effect for the Twin Cities.
Mall of America is located in Bloomington, Minn. at the crossroads of Interstate 494 and Highway 77, approximately 10 minutes from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airports.
