VALENCIA -- With chilly winds blowing Monday afternoon, Jacqueline Patterson struggled a bit to balance her tower of packages.

``I have had the presents for weeks but I got so busy packing presents at home that I didn't realize the date,'' Patterson said, attempting to explain her procrastination.

It seems Patterson was not alone.

Monday was the biggest mailing day of the year for the U.S. Postal Service The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) processes and delivers mail to individuals and businesses within the United States. Stanton added that staffing for the expected rush and extended hours have eased this post office's waiting times.

Kritzberg, who owns an Internet mail See Internet e-mail service.  order business selling accessories for clarinets and saxophones, said he's in the post office almost every day.

``Even during the holidays I have not had to wait more than 10 minutes,'' Kritzberg said.

Lines were minimized as holiday gift-shippers took advantage of automated self-service kiosks The self-service kiosk rose with the development of the ATM and adoption by consumers coupled with advanced technologies such as touch-screens. Still some preferred staying loyal to traditional shipping.

Kelly Hester said she preferred the security of having someone assure her that the packages would get to their destinations, not to mention giving her time to finish sealing a few packages.
