MAKING GOOD ON PROMISES; TEEN LEADERS WIN BIG WITH DEDICATED HELP.Byline: Cynthia Teed Daily News Staff Writer In eighth grade, Ron Ippolito decided he would be Canyon High's student body president. Now a UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University) UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX graduate, he is back at Canyon helping run the student government again. Ippolito is faculty director of the Canyon Associated Student Body program, which recently snared a first for the William S. Hart Union School District by winning the 1999 California Outstanding Activities Program Award from the California Association of Directors of Activities. Canyon High's ASB program won because of the number and variety of activities it offered its students and for the leadership shown by its director, Ron Ippolito, who also teaches history and student government. Ippolito himself graduated from Canyon before going on to the University of California, Los Angeles UCLA comprises the College of Letters and Science (the primary undergraduate college), seven professional schools, and five professional Health Science schools. Since 2001, UCLA has enrolled over 33,000 total students, and that number is steadily rising. . ``Returning to teach at Canyon was one of my goals I set for myself when I was a high school student there,'' he said. Hart district administrators remember the energetic young Ippolito back when he was getting started in the leadership game. ``When Ron was in the eighth grade at Sierra Vista Junior High, he came up to me in the hall one day to shake my hand,'' said Bob Vincent, now assistant principal at Valencia High School Valencia High School may refer to:
Remembering Ippolito as young and precocious, Vincent said the junior high student announced then his intention to be the ASB president when he got to Canyon High. ``And he became the president, he even came back to teach the ASB course at Canyon, after he graduated from UCLA,'' Vincent said. Ippolito was the kind of student willing to try new things - with no theater experience or musical training, he took on the lead in the school's musical comedy, ``Fiddler on the Roof.'' In his new role, he gives students the credit for their award. ``They are the hardest-working group of students in the valley - showing up at 6 a.m. or on weekends to assist with scheduled student activities.'' Canyon's ASB offers more than 130 student activities and emphasizes activities that pull in those who generally might not be interested in participating in student government, Ippolito said. ``Students like musicians,'' he said. ``Well, we have the musical program, Battle of the Bands, for them.'' Canyon's ASB students put out 100 percent effort, said senior class President Collin Cummings. It has been hard, he said, to get everyone involved, so sometimes the students get discouraged, but they don't quit trying. The chain of command at the Hart School district appreciates the efforts Canyon's ASB students have made. Canyon Principal Vicki Engbrecht remembers hiring Ippolito two years ago. ``He promised then to set a goal of 100 percent student participation in school-related activities,'' she said. ``And in just two short years, he not only has reached that goal, he's brought us this award.''
