Brian Edick made a commitment to golf this year. It produced one of the finest individual seasons in the history of a proud Hart High of Newhall program that has turned out annual Foothill League championship contenders and Southern Section postseason participants for more than a decade.

Edick, the 2001 Daily News Player of the Year, trained for his junior season more like a football player than a golfer, combining running and weightlifting with renewed dedication to improving his full-swing and short-game skills.

It produced his second consecutive league individual title and scoring that played no small part in the Indians INDIANS. The aborigines of this country are so called.

 winning their 11th league team title in 12 seasons under coach Dennis Ford, who retired in June.

Then, Edick tied for low score in two of his four postseason elmination tournaments, finishing a combined 11 under par for those events. He capped his season with a six-birdie round of 67 in the CIF/SCGA final, where he came within a playoff play·off also play-off

``He had a slow start and a fantastic finish,'' Ford said of the quiet underclassman who served as his final captain. ``He struggled with his game early and got the ship righted at the end.''

Edick's best effort came in his final and biggest tournament of the season, when he became the first area player to share low score in a CIF/SCGA Championship since Hart's Jason Gore Jason William Gore (born May 17, 1974) is an American professional golfer.

Gore was born in Van Nuys, California. He attended Pepperdine University. Gore plays on the PGA Tour after moving from the Nationwide Tour midseason in 2005.
 lost in a playoff in 1990.

``I haven't seen a Hart kid hit the ball that solid the whole round for a long time,'' Ford said.

Edick is one of six underclassmen on this year's 12-player All-Area squad, which includes two freshmen as well as three seniors who will play college golf on scholarship next season.

This year's All-Area team:

--Ryan Benko- The Pepperdine-bound Village Christian of Sun Valley senior won two individual Alpha League titles and led the Crusaders to two league team titles in their first three seasons of golf.

--Kyle Dowden- Sophomore won a second consecutive Pacific View League individual title and led Camarillo to a team-title repeat before playing in a second consecutive State Amateur Championship.

--Carey Evans- Auburn-bound El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

 of Woodland Hills senior led the Conquistadores to a City 5-A League title and was league MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Officially introduced as the TMS320C80, it combines RISC technology with the functionality of four DSPs on one chip.  as well as area's top performer in City and CIF/SCGA Championships.

--James Logeman- The Tri-Valley League MVP will move on to Long Beach State on scholarship after leading Oak Park to back-to-back league team titles and status among area's elite programs.

--Brian O'Flaherty- The Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. The Marmonte Leauge is part of the CIF Southern Section. Click here to view the league schedule.  individual champion and CIF/SCGA participant, who led Westlake to its 10th consecutive league team title, has earned a golf scholarship to Pepperdine.

--Jeff Osborn- Tulane-bound on scholarship, the three-year Southern Section finalist helped Flintridge Prep extend a Prep League dominance that has produced six league team titles in seven seasons.

--Michael Park- The Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  of La Crescenta junior has won three Pacific League individual championships and led the Falcons into Southern Section tean competition three consecutive years.

--Phil Martinez- The Granada Hills junior tied for seventh in the City Section individual championship to lead the Highlanders to their sixth City team title in nine years, ending Palisades' title run at two years.

--Edgar Reyes- The Mission Hills Alemany freshman won the Mission League individual title to continue a school tradition of excellence dating back to two-time U.S. Public Links champion David Berganio Jr.

--Player of the Year- No area golfer performed better in the most important part of the season than then Hart junior Brian Edick, who shot 69-73-68-67 in postseason, improving his own school underclassman record for sub-par rounds to nine.
