With favorable community response, whether measured by revenues or audiences, the symphony orchestra heads into its third season with grand goals.

``The first concert is about as adventurous as you can get,'' said Marketing Committee Chairman William Benson William Benson (1682 — 2 February 1754) was a talented amateur architect and an ambitious and self-serving Whig place-holder in the government of George I. In 1718, Benson arranged to displace the aged Sir Christopher Wren as Surveyor General of the Royal Works, a project in .

The opening performance - set for 8 p.m. Oct. 17 at Ascension Lutheran Church - is a French program that dares to be different, featuring Romantic era music for organ, orchestra and marimba marimba: see xylophone.

Benson said the concert features an unusual concerto for marimba and orchestra, as well as the largest number of orchestral players in the young history of the Conejo Valley Symphony Orchestra. Referring to 1998-99 as the ``coming out'' season for the orchestra, Benson said the time is right for the young organization to present a concert on a grander scale.

In the beginning, the orchestra was conservative in both spending and programming. That approach, combined with financial support from the community, resulted in the current debt-free status and audience acceptance, Benson said.

``We've spent a quarter of a million dollars in three years, and we don't owe anybody any money,'' he noted.

Music Director Howard Sonstegard explained his role in the process. ``A key factor is to know the community and know who you're playing for.''

Sonstegard credited the stability of the orchestra personnel and ``familiarity'' for helping maintain a high level of community pride and a sense of tradition. ``The audience will get to know the orchestra through its members who perform as soloists.''

Members of the Conejo Valley Symphony Orchestra hold degrees in music and credentials from many of the finest educational institutions and music schools in the country. A number of players in the fully unionized and professional-caliber orchestra also perform with other professional orchestras and bands throughout Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, .

Boss is in high demand as a touring soloist and ensemble musician, she refers to herself as ``a regular member of the orchestra.''

Boss will perform as marimba soloist in the opening concert in the work by Benjamin Godard Benjamin Louis Paul Godard (Paris August 18, 1849 – January 10, 1895 at Cannes) was a French composer probably best known as a writer of salon music.

 titled ``Concerto Romantique.''

``What I like about his concerto is that it has a couple of beautiful melodies that you can grasp and get into,'' Boss said of the marimba work originally scored for the violin. The percussionist went on to describe the music as Asian-sounding and exotic, and the percussion techniques she uses to perform the work as illusory. ``If you can play down into the bar and vibrate the bar properly, you can make the notes sound connected.''

``The mallets are literally almost a blur, she moves so fast,'' Sonstegard said of Boss and her remarkable fluidity.

Boss offers equal kudos to her fellow orchestra members.

``They play with the kind of sound you get from people who know how to anticipate each other,'' Boss said. ``They are supportive of what the project is and what the music is, in order to support what the performance is supposed to be.''

Benson fine-tuned her commentary: ``In this group, there's an esprit de corps esprit de corps Graduate education The degree of happiness of the 'campers' in a place  that is very unusual. That translates to really making music.''

Aptly called Nuit de Debut, the opening concert includes the ``Fra Diavolo Fra Diavolo (frä dēä`vōlō) [Ital.,=friar devil], 1771–1806, Italian bandit and soldier, whose real name was Michele Pezza.  Overture'' by Daniel Francois Auber and ``Symphony No. 3 for Organ'' by Charles Camille Saint-Saens. The latter work will feature the Ascension Lutheran 32-rank three-manual Reuter Pipe Organ.
