History Founded in 1919 by William Andrews Clark, Jr. concert. The program was to have been led by the young Austrian conductor Franz Welser-Most, who is slated to assume the music directorship of the Cleveland Orchestra Cleveland Orchestra, one of the foremost orchestras in the United States. It gave its first performance in 1918 under Nikolai Sokoloff, who was conductor until 1933. Originally, the program was to include Lou Harrison's Suite for Violin, Piano and Small Orchestra and a Mahler symphony. DePreist kept the Harrison, but he substituted Mahler's Tenth Symphony for the previously announced Seventh. The Harrison work, from 1951, is typical of this composer's eclectic but singular style, in which Asian influences and Western forms happily co-mingle. And if DePreist's brisk gestures suggested dispatch more than affection, the performance didn't reveal it. The 10 Philharmonic players lent the music palpable texture, and guest soloists Robert McDuffie Robert McDuffie is an internationally-renowned violinist. He has soloed with many of the major orchestras around the world including those of New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Montreal, Toronto, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Minnesota, Houston, St. (violinist) and Christopher Taylor (pianist) performed with passion and exactitude. Mahler's controversial Tenth Symphony presented a fine contrast to the Harrison. The work is controversial because the composer left it unfinished, though his sketches later provided scholars with the materials to construct a full-fledged work. In a symphony fraught with tension, though one that concludes peacefully, the orchestra made a good impression.
