Karros, who did some TV game and studio work for Fox at the end of last season, was a candidate for the opening created by the Dodgers for a TV or radio analyst spot. He said he really wasn't holding out hope of playing again this season.

``Asking for my release in Oakland and then turning down an offer to go to Baltimore immediately after that, my decision to finish playing was really done last year,'' he said. ``I didn't want it to have an impact on my future broadcast opportunities. Maybe if the Cubs had called again about a big-league spot, I'd have considered it, but outside of that, nothing else would have made sense.''

ESPN plans to use Karros up to twice a week on Monday and/or Wednesday night games, plus holiday broadcasts.

--More A-Rod/Red Sox feud: Kevin Millar became the sixth Red Sox player in six days to criticize Alex Rodriguez for boasting about his workout routine and not measuring up to Derek Jeter as a ``Yankee type.''

``Derek Jeter is the Yankees, period, `` Millar said. ``A-Rod's salary doesn't dictate that he's a Yankee. Making $25 million doesn't mean he's a Yankee.

    ``And then, I think, I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

"Don't know the trade." A Street expression used whenever one party lacks knowledge of a trade or receives conflicting instructions from the other party.
if the guy (Rodriguez) grasped for the respect or whatever, but you don't need to tell people you're an upper-tier player. You don't need to tell people that you work out seven hours a day.''

Meanwhile, A-Rod gave safe, respectful answers to a string of questions at Legends Field in Tampa, Fla., and the closest he came to taking a shot at the Red Sox was when he referred to pitcher Bronson Arroyo as ``Brandon.'' In one instance, he even agreed with them.

``As far as earning your stripes, I really couldn't agree (more) with Trot Nixon and the guys who have said that (he hasn't done that yet), because, hopefully, when I pay the price that Paul O'Neill and Roger Clemens did, then the fans in New York New York, state, United States

--Nen calls it a career: Following yet another setback trying to rehabilitate his shoulder after three operations, former Giants closer Robb Nen has decided to retire.

``He tried and got close again and fell back down,'' San Francisco trainer Stan Conte said Sunday in Scottsdale, Ariz., a day after speaking to Nen about the decision. ``It's been so frustrating. I'm surprised he lasted this long.''

Nen, who had 43 saves and a 2.20 ERA in 2002 to help the Giants reach the World Series, hasn't pitched in more than two years. He played through the pain during the playoffs that season, knowing he needed surgery and that he was risking further damage.

--Pujols monitors injury: Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols has no plans to take it easy during spring training, although his running might be restricted because of a heel injury that hindered him much of last season.

``I'm going to go out and try to win a job,'' he said after reporting to camp at Roger Dean Stadium Roger Dean Stadium is a baseball field located in a shopping district called Abacoa, which is in Jupiter, Florida. The stadium was built in 1998 and holds 7,200 people. , where pitchers and catchers were working out for the second day.

After the season, Pujols underwent sound-wave treatment on his left heel. He was feeling much better in the weeks after the treatment but started having trouble again in January and underwent a second treatment.
