MAJOR INTERNATIONAL SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS GATEWAY FROM SCIENTIFIC-ATLANTA INAUGURATED IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA

ATLANTA, Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Scientific-Atlanta, Inc., (NYSE: SFA) has announced the completed installation and inauguration of a new INTELSAT Standard RAS satellite earth station in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
The system, which functions as a major international communications gateway for the island nation, supports voice, video and data applications. The Scientific-Atlanta earth station was officially inaugurated by the honorable Martin Thompson, MP, PNG's Minister for Communications and Information Services.
Since the $2.4 million contract was awarded by the Post and Telecommunications Corporation in June 1991, Scientific-Atlanta has provided the civil works, design, manufacturing, delivery, installation, testing and commissioning associated with the project. In addition, the company is currently providing operation and maintenance training.
The new system is a major component in a broader telecommunications development plan initiated by Papua New Guinea's government in 1991. When the plan is completed, a state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure will have been established to serve the country's 3 million residents as well as its rapidly growing business community.
"Many countries that have recently invested in upgrading or establishing a modern telecommunications infrastructure have found it to be a key factor in continued economic growth," said Jorge Vespoli, president of Scientific-Atlanta's Satellite Communications Division. "With fast access in reliable and quality international communications, businesses are better able to succeed in the over-expanding and competitive global marketplace."
Satellite communications is playing a key role in Papua New Guinea's telecommunications development plan because of its ability to function in all geographic areas, including the rugged mountainous terrain which obstructs most accessible paths between major population centers in the country.
The new Scientific-Atlanta earth station, which is located at the PNG Satellite Communications Centre outside the capital city of Port Moresby, includes an 18-meter antenna and Intermediate Data Rate equipment, as well as television receivers and exciters.
Scientific-Atlanta designs, engineers, manufacturers, installs, tests and maintains satellite communications and cable television systems, and has provided 45,000 earth station systems to more than 135 countries. In the past 40 years, Scientific-Atlanta's technical leadership and extensive international expertise have earned the company a reputation as a premier turnkey satellite communications system supplier.
Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. is a world leader in broadband communications systems, cable television electronics, satellite-based communications networks, and instrumentation for industrial, government and telecommunications applications.
