MAJOR DEFENSE CONTRACTOR INSTALLS COST-EFFECTIVE WIRELESS LASER COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM TO INTERCONNECT ETHERNET WORK GROUPS

LANCASTER, Pa., Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Laser Communications, Inc. (LCI) has installed its L00-18 wireless laser LAN link system at a major defense contractor's research center campus in southern California.
The L00-18 system uses infrared laser technology to connect the Ethernet TCP/IP traffic between two facilities at the research center.
Laser Communications' wireless LAN link system offered the center a cost-effective alternative to telephone, cable, and microwave building- to-building LAN links. The center discovered that leasing telephone lines or installing fiber-optic cable was cost-prohibitive. Although the two buildings are only 400 feet apart, a public thoroughfare runs between them. To engineer cable and telephone switch installations and secure right-of-way permits was deemed too expensive and time-consuming. Microwave options were also found to be a cost-prohibitive alternative and would require encryption.
The L00-18 laser LAN link system saved an estimated $50,000 in engineering, installation, equipment, and operating costs, LCI said. The system has not experienced any down-time despite hostile weather conditions. Installation of two more laser LAN link systems from LCI is planned for the fall of 1993 to expand the Ethernet network to two other buildings.
The wireless Ethernet L00-18 laser LAN link system simultaneously transmits and receives data through the air at distances up to 1 kilometer. The line-of-sight system can be installed in less than one day, and once installed, the L00-18 requires little maintenance. The system is IEEE 802.3 compliant, protocol transparent, and works with Novell NetWare. The L00-18 is ideal for primary or backup interbuilding communications and is designed to accommodate any campus or urban environment. The laser LAN link system is ideal for universities, medical facilities, governments, financial institutions, and organizations that require fast, reliable data transfer.
Laser Communications, Inc. is a worldwide leader in the application of laser communication technology, and is celebrating its 10th year serving the market with a wide range of laser LAN link systems and products. Located in Lancaster, LCI is a Safeguard Scientifics partner company.
