MAINTAINING THEIR STATUS COLLEGE PROGRAM RECEIVES TOP HONOR.Byline: Sharon Cotal Staff Writer The National Association for the Education of Young Children The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is the largest nonprofit association in the United States representing early childhood education teachers, experts, and advocates in center-based and family day care. has once again granted full accreditation accreditation, n a process of formal recognition of a school or institution attesting to the required ability and performance in an area of education, training, or practice. to the Early Childhood Education program at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. . Child care centers, preschools, kindergartens and before- and after- school programs are eligible to seek NAEYC NAEYC National Association for the Education of Young Children (Washington, DC) accreditation, but only about 7 percent of early childhood programs nationwide receive the prestigious honor. ``We had one of the first college-lab schools in the nation to be accredited accredited recognition by an appropriate authority that the performance of a particular institution has satisfied a prestated set of criteria. accredited herds cattle herds which have achieved a low level of reactors to, e.g. by the NAEYC, in the mid-1980s,'' said Diane Stewart, director of the college's program. ``We are so pleased that we have maintained our status and have once again received recognition for providing a high quality program for young children and their families.'' The Early Childhood Education Center serves a dual purpose, providing early childhood education for local children while at the same time serving as a laboratory experience for students in the college's childhood education training programs, Stewart said. Approximately 35 to 40 College of the Canyons students are assigned to the center each semester se·mes·ter n. One of two divisions of 15 to 18 weeks each of an academic year. [German, from Latin (cursus) s and about 350 students majoring in child development take their classes in the center, located on campus at 25455 Rockwell Canyon Road, Valencia. To achieve accreditation, the center had to undergo an intensive self- study, an on-site visit from a group of early childhood professionals and an evaluation by a team of national experts. Once awarded, the accreditation is valid for three years. ``We got our notice that we are now good for three more years,'' Stewart said. ``It was a lot of work, but we're very proud of maintaining our status.''
