MAINFRAME SALES GROWTH EXCEEDS PC GROWTH IN FOURTH QUARTER
STAMFORD, Conn., Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Large system sales revenue grew faster than PC sales revenue in the fourth quarter 1991, for the first time in five years, according to Yardstick, a service of Gartner Group, the leading research firm specializing in the information industry.
While price cuts and sluggish demand for desktop systems resulted in a record 6.9 percent decline in PC revenue for the fourth quarter 1991 from fourth quarter 1990, mainframe sales revenue declined only 4.4 percent.
"The long-awaited shipments of new mainframes from IBM Corp., Amdahl Corp. and Hitachi Data Systems are causing a temporary reversal of the trends in relative market share of desktop hardware," said Randy Brophy, product manager for the Yardstick Service at Gartner Group. "Mainframe revenue growth is actually exceeding PC growth, and is likely to do so for the next two quarters."
While most computer hardware experienced a down quarter and year, software sales grew 12.2 percent for the fourth quarter and 12.5 percent for the year.
Brophy compiled the data from 163 publicly held U.S. companies in the information industry, e.g., data processing, telecommunications and electronic components.
