For this dedication to others, Carrico tonight will receive a Cardinal's Award from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, given for the last 12 years to those who live ``lives of exemplary service to the church and local community.'' officials said.

Carrico said she was ``flabbergasted'' to learn she was being honored by Cardinal Roger Mahony His Eminence Roger Michael Cardinal Mahony (born February 27, 1936) is an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He currently serves as the fourth Archbishop of Los Angeles, and was elevated to the cardinalate in 1991. .

``To me, these ladies that do the real church things - like taking Communion and doing altar linens, cleaning in the church - those are the women who really should be acknowledged,'' she said. ``They're the backbone of the church work.''

He said he's humbled to be recognized among people who have contributed so much of their time. With a wife of nearly 38 years and seven healthy children, he said he's happy to give back and lend his famous voice to the church.

``We all have our problems and things - they come in and come out - but I think my faith has always been pretty true,'' Campanella said. ``I've stuck to what I believe in. I was raised that way.''

Tod Tamberg, media relations director for the Archdiocese, said a nomination committee identifies people with deep and long-lasting ties to the community. Mahony then makes his choices from that list.

Carrico said the spirit of volunteerism was instilled in her while she growing up in Great Falls Great Falls, city (1990 pop. 55,097), seat of Cascade co., N central Mont., second largest city in the state, at the confluence of the Missouri and Sun rivers and near the falls that give the city its name; inc. 1888. , Mont., the daughter of a Chippewa-Cree American Indian American Indian

``Whenever anything happened that was a semitragedy, all the ranchers would show up at the doorstep to help out, lend a hand,'' Carrico recalled. ``They came by horseback, horse (and) buggy - that's the ancient times I'm talking about . . .

``There was always the feeling around town that, 'I will help if I can.' ''

She came to Catholicism later in life - as an art student in a religious college in Great Falls - and her volunteerism also extends beyond the church doors. Sister Julia Mary Farley, director of the Good Shepherd Center, said Carrico not only works to bring women in from the streets but also helps solicit donations of clothing and other necessities.

``She's always reaching out to women to help them with a listening ear and words of wisdom from life experiences,'' she says. ``That kind of interest really gets to the heart of the homeless people. When you give time and of yourself, that's more important than anything else.''
