LOS ANGELES, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- During the month of December, MagneTek Inc. (NYSE: MAG) received over $200 million in orders for energy-saving electronic lighting ballasts, according to Frank Perna Jr., the company's president and chief executive officer.
Lighting ballasts are transformers that provide power to fluorescent and other gas-filled lamps. Electronic ballasts can cut electricity consumption by as much as 40 percent compared to magnetic ballasts, which power most of the nation's estimated 1.5 billion fluorescent lighting fixtures. For this reason, electronic ballasts qualify for utility rebates, and are in heavy demand for retrofit programs being initiated by building owners and operators throughout the United States.
According to Perna, MagneTek is expanding its electronic ballast manufacturing capacity to meet demand, which is expected to remain strong for the rest of the decade, driven in large part by new laws, such as the recently enacted Energy Policy Act of 1992. MagneTek currently turns out some 200,000 electronic ballasts per week at plants in Mississippi, Tennessee and Wisconsin and expects to at least double this production rate by July of 1993.
Including December's unusually heavy order inflow, MagneTek's electronic ballast backlog, deliverable over the next three years, now stands at well over $300 million and continues to rise. "Since most of this is for retrofitting of existing lighting components, it represents incremental business for us and should result in a rate of internal sales growth beyond our expectations," Perna concluded.
MagneTek manufactures a wide variety of Energy Engineered(TM) motors, drives, distribution transformers and power supplies that also figure prominently in the nation's energy-savings equation. The company reported sales of $1.23 billion for its most recent fiscal year, which ended on June 30, 1992.
