MAGMA COPPER CO. ANNOUNCES YOUTH SUMMER JOBS

TUCSON, Ariz., May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Magma Copper Co. (NYSE: MCU) announced that it will provide approximately 100 summer jobs this year for college students as well as disadvantaged and low- income high school-level youth.
Approximately 18 disadvantaged high school students will be offered industrial-type work which will include an educational enrichment component and personal mentoring by experienced supervisors at Magma's San Manuel and Miami, Ariz., operations.
Referred by schools and social agencies, the disadvantaged group will learn not only job skills and safe work practices but also will learn how a large firm is organized and operates for the benefit of employees, stockholders, customers, suppliers and the community. They will also receive educational enrichment programs through local community colleges.
 J. Burgess Winter, Magma's president and chief executive officer, commented that the youth employment initiative is in response to President Bill Clinton's "Summer Challenge" for private sector summer jobs. Winter attended a White House meeting launching the program with Labor Secretary Robert Reich and Education Secretary Richard Riley and supports the National Alliance of Business which is helping facilitate the national program.
Said Winter, "This is a real opportunity for Arizona business firms to exert a positive effort for social change. Magma intends to follow through by helping youth at all levels into the mainstream of purposeful work and careers.
"We will continue its long-standing practice of providing approximately 80 jobs for college students at its operations in San Manuel, Superior and Miami, Ariz. The program is designed to demonstrate the importance of the mining industry to the U.S. economy, the value of well-paying mining jobs in the copper industry, and to help Magma acquire quality graduates who will provide us the management and leadership of the future."
The company, which has 4,300 employees, has received worldwide recognition for its progressive labor relations practices.
